They feed on fish, smaller sharks, squid, octopus, crabs, and lobsters. Hammerhead sharks as a whole will feed on a wide variety of prey. In the Atlantic hammerheads can frequent the waters from the coast of Europe and southern Canada, to the tips of Africa and South America. They also congregate around islands across the Pacific, and in the Indo-Pacific along the coast of southern Russia all the way to Africa. In the eastern Pacific Ocean, hammerheads swim from California to the tip of South America. Some species are widespread, while others have more specific and restricted ranges. Distribution of the Hammerhead SharkĮach hammerhead species has their own individual range. The highest concentrations of hammerheads occur near coastlines and along continental shelves. They almost never range into Arctic waters. These sharks are most common in tropical, subtropical, and temperate seas. For the most part, they prefer warmer waters. The specific habitat preference of these predators depends upon the species. To keep a nasty sting, the shark will sneak up on the stingray and pin it down with its head. They use their electroreceptors to detect the stingrays buried beneath the sand. Stingray Snack – This shark’s favorite prey to hunt are stingrays.Despite the difference in shape, the function of the head remains the same. While they have somewhat similar shaped heads, a few species have more rounded cephalofoils. Not so Hammer-Shaped – Not all species of hammerhead sharks have a hammer-shaped head.By having more pores over a wider space, hammerheads are much more perceptive than other species of sharks. These pores allow the sharks to “see” the electrical charges emitted when animals move. Electroreceptors – All sharks have sensory pores called ampullae of Lorenzini.Second, the expansive hammer-shaped head gives them additional sensory advantages.

First, the placement of their eyes on either side gives them virtually 360º vision. There are a two proposed uses/advantages to this oddly shaped head. The “Hammer” Head – The uniquely shaped head that all hammerhead sharks share is called a cephalofoil.Learn more about these interesting creatures below. This has driven the sharks elsewhere when they would normally have stuck around a little longer looking for tarpon. There are nine different species of hammerhead shark, and each has its own unique traits and adaptations. Currently, my part of Florida (greater Tampa Bay area) is getting absolutely crushed by Red Tide and there are thousands and thousands of pounds of dead fish in the water. The water is warm and they can find easy meals. The background audio you hear is from people who thought they were about to witness a person getting bitten by a huge Hammerhead Shark. This video was filmed by Katie Allyson Thomson near the Splash Resort in Panama City Beach last Friday. I’m just of the mind that there are better and more scenic places in the Florida Panhandle to visit but everyone’s entitled to their own opinion on that.

But I suppose you could add ‘shark fishing from the beach’ as a reason to hit up PCB these days. In my mind, there aren’t a ton of reasons to visit Panama City Beach after they outlawed drinking on the beach during the month of March. This clip has gone viral on TikTok and since taken off on YouTube so here are both versions: The shark then backs off at the last moment and the water miraculously didn’t turn brown from a nervous swimmer. We’ll just need to call it as we see it here and what we see is a massive shark charging a swimmer in shallow water. There’s no way of knowing how a hammerhead ‘thinks’ and what thinking even looks like for that species. We can’t ever ascribe ‘intentions’ to whatever the Hammerhead Shark in this clip is doing because it’s an animal and we’re humans. But the belief is the shark is testing if you or the boat is a turtle or something edible, or it’s possible the shark is firing a warning shot as ‘this is my area’. There’s no way of knowing for certain what the shark is doing in these instances. I’ve heard and read about countless stories over the years where kayakers or swimmers were ‘bumped’ by a shark. Sometimes a shark just wants to give you a little bumpy bump to see what you’re all about.
